This year my mom will turn 74 years old.  And since this month just happens to be her birthday month, I thought it appropriate to direct this month’s theme on our aging mothers.

Forty-five years ago my mom looked like the photograph above to your right.  Of course for those of you who know her, know that she hasn’t changed much.  She is still spunky, thoughtful, ambitious, and as innovative as ever.  I left out pretty because her photos reveal that without saying.  fifteen years ago, mom returned to the college classroom to finish her hours towards a bachelors degree.  Since the going was good for her and she liked walking across that stage, she decided to pump it up a notch. This year my mom will turn 74 years old.  And since this month just happens to be her birthday month, I thought it appropriate to direct this month’s theme on our aging mothers.

Forty-five years ago my mom looked like the photograph on your left above.  Of course for those of you who know her, know that she hasn’t changed much.  She is still spunky, thoughtful, ambitious, and as innovative as ever.  I left out pretty because her photos reveal that without saying.  fifteen years ago, mom returned to the college classroom to finsh her hours towards a bachelors degree.  Since the going was good for her and she liked walking across that stage, she decided to pump it up a notch. She went back the next year and got her masters.  Not long after, she expereinced a massive heart attack while at home alone.  Now, the way this story has been going, I’m sure you know that she survived. Right? Not because her heart was so strong, but the God she serves is and by George it’s not in her nature to be defeated.  Undefeated is the one word that I want to focus on.  It’s the word that keeps my mom going and will more than likely be the cause of her longevity and also the cause of our, her children, woes.

Some of you may already be observing your mother as she experiences independence withdrawals. The fear of giving up their independence and becoming dependent.  Trust me, our aging mothers are very much aware of their age and our motives to hover over them like helicopters.  Perhaps, it’s the transition from being hovered over when they were kids to hovering over their own children to suddenly being hovered over again.  Relinquishing their autonomy is not easy and for some may never happen. Like my 92 year old grandmother who lived alone until she died and would have rather been dead than to live somewhere other than her home I’m only 53 years old, and sometimes I cringe when my daughters attempt to tell me what to do and where to go and what to wear.

Stay tuned ladies, there will be guest authors weighing in on our topic this month.  And if you would like to be one of them, contact me at lytrawilson@yahoo.com.  So, you can share your information and a photograph of you and your mom or you and your daughter.  Looking forward to hearing all the loving, funny, and extraordinary stories.
